The survey is out! I created a survey to gather information on the challenges musicians face within music marketing, intending to use this information to inform the project I will create. The topics I looked at were challenges in music marketing, promotion methods, target audiences, platforms used, content used, branding, collaborations, digital marketing tools, budgets and revenue streams. I went through a few different drafts, changing the wording of certain questions. For example, I changed the phrase ‘personal branding’ to ‘musical identity’ with the hope that the respondents would understand that better and be able to give a more direct answer.
I also shared with with two trusted musicians before publishing it to gain some feedback, both of whom said it was easy to understand and thought-provoking. Then I shared it online using Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook. I created posts about the project with a call to action. “Calling all Musicians! Are you tired of juggling music on the side? Frustrated with finding your audience? Unsure how to make a name for yourself? Struggling to stay active online? You’re not alone! Let’s turn this around together!” I hope that by presenting the survey in this way, it will encourage more responses by framing the survey as action musicians can take to change their current career trajectory, rather than research they’re being a passive part of. I shared this post on my Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn pages, and also posted to specific Facebook groups in both the music and marketing sectors. I then sent personal messages to chosen contacts within my community and the music industry to get more responses from people in my target audience. I decided to share the survey on social media sites as the audience I am targeting is likely to be very active on these platforms.
Now we just wait and see what the responses are!
